Tarneit has grown quickly, and many of its rentals are newer homes on estates near Tarneit station and Tarneit Central. Newer homes are easier to clean in some ways, but they have features that are easy to miss or damage at the end of a lease: hybrid flooring, stone benchtops, ducted heating vents, split systems and wide sliding doors.
This checklist is for Tarneit renters preparing for a final inspection. It follows the areas agents usually compare with the entry condition report.
What Victorian renters need to leave behind
Under Victoria's rental rules, you need to leave the property reasonably clean and in the same condition as when you moved in, apart from fair wear and tear. Consumer Affairs Victoria explains how this links to your bond. Find your entry condition report and photos before you start, and clean to that standard.
Kitchen
- Oven cavity, racks, trays and door glass degreased.
- Cooktop and rangehood, including the metal filters.
- Stone or laminate benchtops wiped with a pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid vinegar and bleach on stone.
- Cupboards and drawers emptied and wiped inside and out, including the pantry.
- Dishwasher filter cleaned and the door seal wiped.
- Splashback and sink polished.
Bathrooms and laundry
- Shower screens descaled and grout scrubbed.
- Toilets cleaned, including the base and behind the pan.
- Vanities and mirrors cleaned, drawers wiped out.
- Exhaust fan covers dusted.
- Laundry tub, cabinet and the space behind the washing machine.
Living areas and bedrooms
- Built-in wardrobes wiped, including shelves and hanging rails.
- Skirting boards, door frames, doors and light switches.
- Ducted heating vents and split system covers dusted. Check whether your lease says who cleans split system filters.
- Window sills, sliding-door tracks and fly screens.
- Light marks removed from walls where it is safe for the paint. Don't scrub flat paint hard.
Floors
Many Tarneit homes have hybrid or laminate floors in the living areas and carpet in the bedrooms. Vacuum hard floors, then damp mop with a cleaner suited to the floor. Avoid steam mops on hybrid and laminate, as heat and moisture can damage the joins. For carpets, check your lease and entry report to see whether a professional carpet clean is expected.
Outside
- Garage swept and any oil marks treated.
- Alfresco or courtyard swept, and cobwebs removed.
- Bins emptied and rinsed.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does "reasonably clean" mean when I leave a Tarneit rental?
Consumer Affairs Victoria says renters must leave the property reasonably clean and in the same condition as at the start of the lease, apart from fair wear and tear. Your entry condition report is the comparison point, so clean everything it lists, not just the rooms you used most.
Should I steam clean the carpets in a new-estate rental?
Check your lease and entry condition report. If the carpets were professionally cleaned before you moved in, or your lease asks for it, a professional carpet clean is the safest choice. Hard floors such as hybrid or laminate should not be steam mopped; use a damp mop and the manufacturer's cleaner instead.
How long before handover should I book the clean?
Book it for after the removalists leave and before you return the keys. An empty home lets cleaners reach skirting boards, wardrobes, cupboards and floors properly. Leave a day spare in case anything needs a touch-up.
